As it scans the disk looking to recover deleted files, Recover My Files provides the ability to preview the contents of the files it finds during the search. This can be done both during the search and once the search has completed, meaning that you don’t have to wait for the scan to complete in order to recover deleted files that have already been located.

Preview files as the scan proceeds

The search results can be displayed using different criteria to make it easier to check the results and locate particular files.

Selecting the Folder tab will display the file and folder structure of the search results. A folder can be expanded to show all the files within it and then clicking on individual files will display them in the preview pane. Selecting and saving files using the folder view will result in the folder structure of the saved files being replicated.

Selecting the File tab will list recovered files by their file type extension.

The Date tab allows files to be listed and located according to Creation, Modified or Accessed dates (selected at the bottom of the window).

The Find tab can be used one the search has been completed or stopped and can be used to refine the search results based on a number of criteria, making it easy to locate files accordingly.

Sort and Select the results as required

Save and Recover Deleted Files

Saving and recovering the deleted files that you want requires Recover My Files to be activated.

An activation key can be purchased through this website or by using the Buy Now button within the product. At the end of the purchase process your activation key is provided on the final webpage and is also sent to you by email.

The downloaded version of Recover My Files is fully functional with the save functionality included but disabled until a valid activation is entered.

Applying the activation key to the evaluation version will convert it to a fully licenced version and you can then continue using the software to save and recover deleted files. There is no need to download a new copy, or re-run the search. Recovered files displayed in the search results can be saved as soon as the activation key is entered.

Enter the Activation Key and continue with the file recovery process uninterrupted

The recovered files must be saved to a different disk or storage media such as a second hard drive, USB memory drive, CD/DVD etc). It is not possible to save them back to the same disk as this would risk overwriting the very files you are trying to recover.

In such cases, after downloading and installing Recover My Files, run the product and then choose the Recover Drive option in the wizard screen.

Select Recover a Drive and click on Next

Recover My Files will then scan the computer system and all the storage devices, disk drives and connected devices will be identified and displayed as show below.

Selecting a drive for recovery

Find the hard disk which matches the size of the problem drive. In cases where a Hard Disk is shown to have more than one partition it is usually better to select and search on the whole hard disk, not just a division of it. Then click Next.

Select the Automatic drive recovery option.

Select Automatic drive recovery

Recover My Files will scan the disk searching for the internal file structure components of certain file types. By locating related header, footer and structural information for files of these types, Recover My Files can locate the missing file system information.

If required, the file types used by Recover My Files to do this can be amended manually using the “Drive recovery using selected file types” option instead of Automatic. The file types used in automatic mode are .exe, .jpeg, .doc, .zip .els, .avi and iTunes files.

File Type Header Selection for Drive Recovery

If none of those file types are known to exist on the disk then it may make sense to choose those that did. Similarly, if you have a specific file type that you require to be recovered it can help speed up the process of recovering them as these files will then be found more quickly as part of the drive recovery process. Adding additional file types to the drive recovery search will increase the length of time taken to complete it however.

During the initial part of the drive recovery search, Recover My Files will try to locate and rebuild complete lost disk drive partitions.

If a lost or missing partition is located and can be recovered, the file structure including all the missing folders and files can be displayed in the Folder view at the end of the initial search phase.

Once the initial phase has completed, Recover My Files will then move on to its second phase in which it uses this information to scan the disk to locate all the missing file system records. This can take some time and the number of file system records found is shown in the progress bar.

Whilst the scan is in progress, the files that have been found so far are listed and can be viewed in the preview window to see if they are recoverable. If you can see that particular files you want to recover are displayed in the preview screen, you can cancel the scan at that point to recover and save them.

Select Recover Files and Click on Next

Recover My files will then locate and identify all the storage devices connected to the PC. This includes hard drives, memory card readers, USB drives etc.

Select the drive containing the deleted files that you want to recover….

…then choose Search for Deleted Files.

This is a relatively fast scan that will quickly search the drive for files that have been deleted from the Recycle Bin. It will locate those files which the file system has marked as deleted but for which there is still enough information for them to be recovered.

The more recently the files were deleted, the greater the likelihood of being successfully found and recovered. As more new data and files get written to the drive over time, the greater the chance there is that the data belonging to the deleted files will get overwritten.

Recovered files will be displayed in a list and can be clicked on to see a visual preview. If the file can be seen in the preview window it is recoverable and can be saved once Recover My Files is activated with a licence key.

If a search for Deleted Files does not display the deleted files that you wish to recover, then you need to run the search for Lost File Types too.

This search will scan the disk at a ‘lower’ level searching for file data where the file system records relating to the file data have been destroyed. It is often the case that the file system record no longer exists, but the actual file data does.

Recover My Files searches the disk performing a file header search, identifying Lost Files by the header, content and footer components of their internal file structure.

This is a much more resource intensive search and can take much longer than a search for deleted files only. The more filetypes that are included in the search the longer it will take. It can be kept faster by reducing the number of filetypes being searched for. If you are looking for say, jpeg image files only, then restrict the search to that filetype.

Restricting the Filetype Header selection will improve the scan time.

Unlike deleted files that are recoverable, Lost Files will not have their original filename displayed in the list of recovered files. They will be displayed as “LostFile-FileType_X”. You can locate and verify which files you want to recover and save using the preview function.

Recover My Files is capable of recovering a wide range of filetypes. This includes various photo, image and graphic file types such as .jpeg .jpg .crw and .raf image files for example as well as .bmp .gif .psp .eps .pcx .swf .tif and .tiff graphic filetypes etc.

Recover My Files has specific support for over 200 different filetypes including all the most common file extensions.

One of the most frequent causes of data loss is accidentally deleting photos from a camera card before they have been copied to a computer for storage. Often this is a case of deleting the wrong file, or sometimes performing an accidental reformat of the camera card.

As with most file and data recovery situations, what happens after that is crucial to being able to successfully recover deleted photos from memory card.

To increase the chances of recovering deleted photos, no further images should be saved on the camera’s memory card. Each additional photo that is taken after this point rapidly increases the danger of the image dat for the deleted files being overwritten on the card and lost forever.

If you don’t already own Recover My Files download a copy here onto your PC.

Then connect the camera directly to the PC using a camera to USB cable (which usually comes with the camera when new). Alternatively, ensure the camera is switched off and remove the memory card from it and put it either directly into your PC’s card reader if it has one, or into a USB attached card reader.

Then run Recover My Files.

When the Recover My Files wizard starts, select the File Recovery option and click on Next.

It will then show you a list of all the disk drives and storage devices such as memory cards, usb attached devices etc. Select the appropriate device that you wish to recover deleted photos from and click on Next.

Select the Device Containing the Deleted Photos

You then need to select a file recovery option. The recommended scan, “Search for deleted files”, will recover deleted photos in many cases. This is also the fastest scan. The results are displayed in a list. Clicking on a file in the list will generate an image in the preview window. If you can see your deleted photo image displayed there, then the file can be recovered and saved.

If you do not see your deleted images in the list then click “Start Recovery” in the top left corner and repeat the above process up to the point of selecting the file recovery option. This time select the second option which includes a search for selected “Lost File” types and click on Next.

Ensure that the particular file type you need to recover is included. Typically, the “Camera” file type option will include all likely photo file types. Then click on Next.

Select the Correct FileTypes

This scan is much more extensive and searches the device at a much lower level. It should produce more results but is also likely to take much longer to complete. You can view the list of files it finds as the scan progresses though and also preview the contents of individual files in the list. If you see the deleted photos that you want to recover, you can stop the scan and then proceed to recover and save your deleted files.

If your deleted file is a “Lost File” it will not have it’s original filename, but will be displayed as “LostFile-FileType_X”. When it is recovered and saved, you may wish to rename it.

Saving the recovered files requires the product to be fully licenced. This requires an activation key which can be purchased instantly using the Buy Online button in the product. Just cut and paste the activation key from the email or webpage displayed after the purchase process is complete and you can complete the recovery of your deleted photos without having to restart Recover My Files.

The Recover Files option for data recovery will generally apply in situations where the disk drive (or storage media concerned) is working correctly but you need to recover deleted files that have been accidentally deleted.

For example:

Recover My files is safe to use. When it performs data recovery it does not alter the contents of the device being searched and so maintains the integrity of the data during the data recovery process.

Using Recover My Files for Data Recovery

Use the link below to download the latest version of Recover My files.

If possible save and install the Recover My Files data recovery program to a different drive than the one you need to recover data from.

For example if you lost data from your PC’s main drive (often the ‘C’ Drive) download it to a different drive on the PC (if you have multiple drives) or an external drive if possible.

If the data has been deleted from an external device like a USB memory stick, or external drive, ensure that Recover My Files is downloaded onto the PC’s main drive instead.

Basically, you should try and avoid writing new files to the same storage device as the one containing the deleted files.

After installing the software, run Recover My Files. The start up wizard will provide a choice of file recovery or drive recovery options.

After selecting the appropriate data recovery options, Recover My files will scan the device for deleted files and lost data. The evaluation version of Recover My Files allows a user to search the disk (or other storage device such as a memory card, USB memory stick etc) for lost and deleted files. The list of files found will be displayed and the contents of any file can be previewed to ensure that it is possible to recover the deleted files concerned.

Preview Recovered File Contents

You can apply filters to the results to reduce the number of files displayed and show only those that match your criteria most closely.

Saving the recovered data requires that an activation key for Recover My Files has been purchased. This can be done through this website or using the Buy Now button within the product. At the end of the purchase process your activation key is provided on the final webpage and is also sent to you by email.

Recover My Files Activation Screen

Applying the activation key to the evaluation version will convert it to a fully licenced version and you can then continue using the software to save the recovered files.

The recovered files must be saved to a different disk or storage media such as a second hard drive, USB memory drive, CD/DVD etc). It is not possible to save them back to the same disk as this would risk overwriting the very files you are trying to recover.
